This work was commissioned by the combined elementary programs of the Department of Defense Dependents' Schools in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Vogelweh Elementary School there had a thriving band program for grades 3–5. Kaiserslautern Elementary School nearby had a similar thriving orchestra program for the same grade levels.

This piece was premiered at the 1989 annual performance of the “World's Largest Concert”, by the combined band and orchestra.
